Walk through the well-designed Connecticut farmhouse hidden inside a humble exterior

Following a tragedy or hardship, many people desire to start anew, in a new country, city or home. For Mary Jane Liu, the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy on her beloved home in Westport, Connecticut led her to build a new residence where the old had once stood. However, her approach in the process of designing a new retreat would take her down a different road than her old home had. Mary wanted her home to be safe from the possibility of rising flood waters, no maintenance and very energy efficient. In turn, she enlisted the expertise of Sellars Lathrop Architects LLC, an architectural firm she had worked with before, to design and construct a 2400 square foot farmhouse complete with 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths.
The result is a light and airy structure featuring a neutral color palette, hardwood floors and plenty of light-giving windows. Additional touches such as a shiplap accent wall, Shaker-style cabinetry and barn wood sliding doors provide additional country flavor. The open concept living space allows family and friends to flow easily from room to room while still keeping in contact with one another. This is also great for the hostess if she is working in the kitchen or enjoying a cup of coffee at the dining room table, she is still in touch with those around her. Most importantly, after withstanding a natural disaster, the owner's of this home are likely to take comfort in the safe and attractive design of this modern farmhouse.
